Klova: eco-friendly beauty.

We love discovering new local boutiques that want to make a difference in the city. Recently, we had the luxury of meeting with Vanessa the owner and creator of Klova Boutique. Klova is a small boutique located in the heart of Montreal that sells natural and eco-friendly products. Their mission, as stated on their website, is to help people transition to a healthier, more environmentally-friendly lifestyle and help them reinforce their already established good habits. They offer a variety of affordable quality products with at least one of the following assets: Healthy, Eco-friendly and Socially Responsible. On top of visiting the boutique and falling in love with vibe of it, we interviewed Vanessa to ask her about her shop and what Klova means to her.

What’s the story behind Klova?

I wanted to change my habits towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle. I realized that I couldn’t find all the products I needed at the same place. Most natural, ecofriendly stores were either grocery stores, and so I couldn’t find all the beauty products I needed, or they were really crowded with products everywhere, which for some reason makes me a little claustrophobic. Also, while shopping for my products, I had a feeling that I couldn’t trust all the products that were labeled as “natural” (how do you define natural anyway?) and I didn’t want to google every single ingredient every time.

So one day I started working on the idea of having a nice eco friendly shop, which would allow people to discover great quality products and simple eco friendly alternatives to their everyday products.

Why did you want to start your own company?

I completed my graduate studies in Management & Sustainable Development at HEC Montreal. I used to get out of class, almost depressed, realizing that there were so many problems and not as many solutions. I then decided to be part of the solution. I applied for different jobs in the field, mostly in the corporate world (which was my dream at the time.. Not so much today!), and I wasn’t successful at all! They were asking for 5 to 10 years of experience! Oh well... I ended up working in different admin jobs that I liked, but I knew it wasn’t for me.. I wanted to be more creative and to work on projects that were well aligned with my values. I think that’s what gradually led me to opening my own company.

What makes your boutique unique?

The body care, cosmetics and well being sections (you can find a great variety of products...and hopefully more to come soon). A lot of the products I sell are handmade or from small companies and that gives them a lot of personality!

Can you tell us about the companies you work with and sell in your store?

Most companies I work with are small local companies. Some companies I already knew before, but I’m discovering a lot of new ones either through social media, expos, or by client recommendation (which are usually the best!). I have a few criteria, especially when the company isn’t very known. The products need to fit well with the store’s overall objective and vibe. The ingredients, the production process, the impact (either on your health and/or on the environment), if the product is also available in bulk, etc.

What is the best thing about having your own boutique?

FREEDOM!! Haha! Nope! For now I kind of work 7 days a week. But, I get to choose what I’m working on, the values that my company stands by and I get to be very creative and that’s the most important for me.

Klova Boutique is open tuesday through sunday and their online shop is accessible 24/7 for those who like to shop late at night ;)
